Caldwell Zoo is open every day except   Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s
On 85 beautiful acres in Tyler, Texas, Caldwell Zoo has more than 2,000 animals to amaze and educate your whole family. You’ll discover animals roaming over plains, swimming in ponds or climbing trees in multi-species environments carefully created to represent their natural North American, South American and East African habitats.
Conservation is an important part of Caldwell Zoo’s mission to preserve and protect animals. As part of that mission the zoo is home to a dozen endangered species, including the cheetahs, ring-tailed lemurs, thick-billed parrots and black rhinoceros. In addition to species listed as endangered, the zoo houses numerous animals that are threatened (the population is at risk of becoming endangered). Coatis and bald eagles are currently on the list of threatened species.

iHelp save a rhino by donating your old cell phone.

Help us turn your cell phones, cell phone batteries and chargers into much needed funds for rhino conservation and at the same time keep toxins found in these phones from ending up in our landfills and poisoning our environment.

Collection boxes are located at the zoo’s front entry and Tyler Recycling Center. All proceeds collected from cell phone recycling at Caldwell Zoo will be donated directly to the International Rhino Foundation.
At first glance, these animals may not seem to have much in common. But most species that become threatened or endangered share a set of common traits. For example, many species live in areas that are being destroyed by the encroachment of humans through farming or land development. Deforestation is another problem for endangered species, as animals are pushed farther and farther from their natural habitat.

Habitat destruction
usually considered to be the number one threat to the wildlife of our world. In addition, some species fall prey to hunters looking to capitalize on an animal’s economic value, whether for fur trade, jewelry, meat, traditional folk medicine, cosmetics or souvenirs.
Other factors that threaten a species include:
Restricted distribution – an animal lives in only one small place in the world, so one disaster could prove to be devastating to a species.
Migration across international boundaries – species protection requires cooperation from different governments, which is often difficult to achieve.
Adverse to humans – animals may be unable to live and breed in environments that are becoming more populated by humans.
Long gestation period or low birth rate – the black rhinoceros, for example, has a gestation period of 16 months and only has one calf at a time.
Inability to adapt – the animals are unable to survive new factors in their environment, such as chemicals, noise, or air and water pollution.

Pet trade – animals that are popular pets, such as parrots, often die in shipping or because of neglect or abuse.
Domination by an introduced species – sometimes a new species is a predator with no natural enemies and it destroys an existing animal population.
The fact is, in our modern world, many factors threaten animals. And once an animal is extinct, it’s gone forever. At Caldwell Zoo we take our mission of conservation very seriously. We know it is important to protect endangered species and help them breed, encouraging the survival of the species. This zoo is A-1 for adults and children of all ages. You should visit often. There is lots to see and do.    http://www.caldwellzoo.org/

Texas Shakespeare Festival

2011 Season
Thursday, June 30th, 2011 – Sunday, July 31st, 2011

The season will open on Thursday night, June 30, with The Taming of the Shrew, one of Shakespeare’s earliest and funniest plays and perhaps the world’s best-known treatment of an age-old theme — the battle of the sexes. It is a war of wits and wills between the fiery Kate and the arrogant Petruchio as he attempts to woo her and to win her against her wishes. Starring two TSF alumnae, Meaghan Sullivan (2009, 2010) and Arthur Lazalde (2006, 2007) and directed by Mark Mineart who played the title role in our first production of Cyrano de Bergerac in 1990. The Festival produced “Shrew” twice before, in 1988 and in 1996.

Our second opening night, on Friday, July 1, will be The Beaux’ Stratagem, a classic British comedy written by George Farquhar in 1707, but revised and updated by Thornton Wilder (Our Town) and Ken Ludwig (Crazy for You; Lend Me a Tenor). Considered one of the great English comedies of all time, this totally new adaptation is the story of two young Don Juans, down on their luck and in disguise, hoping to find rich heiresses who will marry them. Similar in style to Oliver Goldsmith’s She Stoops to Conquer, which TSF produced in 1992, The Beaux’ Stratagem is full of comic surprises and crackling dialogue. Kristine Holtvedt from Purdue University is directing the production.
Saturday, July 2 is opening night for Hamlet, or more precisely “The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark,” directed by Lee Ernst from the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre. Hamlet is Shakespeare’s masterpiece and perhaps the most perfect play ever written. Mr. Ernst has reduced the script to approximately half its original length but preserved all of its major plot elements as well as its most eloquent poetry. The most-quoted, most talked-about, most thought-provoking play in history continues to intrigue, mystify and amaze audiences around the world. TSF produced Hamlet twice before, in 1988 and again in 2001. TSF alumnus Matthew Simpson (2009) is playing the title role, with Clark Stevens (Noah in last season’s Two by Two) as Polonius.
Ernest in Love, the musical this season, opens on Sunday evening, July 3. Based on Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, which some consider the funniest play in the English language, it opened on Broadway in 1960. Since its New York revival in 2009, this sparkling musical is finally earning the respect it deserves. Written by Anne Croswell with music by Lee Pockriss, the show retains Wilde’s inimitable wordplay and immortal witticisms, and adds clever, character-driven songs such as Lady Bracknell’s “A Handbag is Not a Proper Mother!” Our production features TSF alumna Kathleen Mulligan (1987) as Lady Bracknell, and is directed by Stephen Terrell, a TSF founding member and Longview native, who is returning for his sixteenth year.

Aesop’s Fables, our play for children, will open at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, July 19. This original script is written and directed by TSF veteran costume designer Joel Ebarb, and it includes five of Aesop’s famous allegories: “The Fox and the Grapes”; “The Lion and the Mouse”; “The Grasshopper and the Ant”; “The Boy Who Cried Wolf”; and “The Pig Who Wanted More”. The performances will incorporate both live actors and puppets, and are sure to entertain children of all ages while teaching universal and ageless moral lessons. Adults are invited to come laugh (and learn) as well!
Single Tickets $28-$22; Season Ticket Package $85; Children’s Show Tickets $7-$5

  1. When someone writes an piece of writing he/she maintains the image of a user in his/her mind that how
a user can be aware of it. Therefore that’s why this article
    is outstdanding. Thanks!

  2. First of all I would like to say fantastic blog! I
had a quick question which I’d like to ask if you do not
mind. I was curious to know how you center yourself and
clear your mind prior to writing. I have had difficulty clearing my thoughts in getting my ideas out there.
I do enjoy writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes
tend to be lost simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any ideas or tips?
    Many thanks!
