There is a particular kind of magic that settles over East Texas in August. The cicadas
hum their steady chorus from the pines, the humidity wraps around you like a warm hug
the second you step outside, and somewhere, always, someone's smoker is working
overtime, sending curls of hickory smoke drifting across a porch.
Here at the Rosevine Inn, we've thrown open the shutters, poured the sweet tea into
sweating glasses, and started making our list of everything worth doing this month.

camps around the Tyler area this month, do yourselves a favor and make a night of it
and have your own summer getaway. There's nothing quite like trading the minivan for a
summer evening on the porch, a home-cooked breakfast, and a good night's sleep

Curtain Calls and Curious Tales
If you like your evenings served with a little intrigue, August opens strong. The
Goodman Mystery Dinner: The Chef's Secret kicks things off on Saturday, August 1,
from 6:00–8:30 p.m. at the Goodman-LeGrand Museum (624 N. Broadway, Tyler).
Picture candlelight flickering against Victorian wallpaper, hushed conversation, and an
immersive 1990s British mystery unfolding course by course. Tickets are $50 and they go fast — email disham@tylertexas.com to get on the waitlist.
For those who prefer their drama set to music, Tyler Civic Theatre presents Into the
Woods, the beloved Sondheim and Lapine musical, running August 1–2 and August
6–9 (7:30 p.m. evenings, 2:30 p.m. Sunday matinee). Expect the hush of the house
lights dimming, the first swell of strings, and fairy-tale characters tangled up in

Later in the month, Tyler Civic Theatre closes out August with "When the World Ends"
winner of the 2025 New Plays Festival Audience Choice Award, running August 27–29
at 7:30 p.m. and August 30 at 2:30 p.m. It's the kind of story that lingers with you on the
drive home, windows cracked to smell the pines as the night air finally starting to cool.

Front Porch Fun for the Whole Family
August has plenty to keep the little ones (and the not-so-little ones) entertained. Head 
to First Friday at Lindale Family Farms on Friday, August 7, where the smell of funnel cake
and food truck fare mingles with live music drifting across the fields. Admission is $10
for adults, and kids get in free — because summer nights like this are meant to be

Rise early on Saturday, August 8, for the Family Circle Fun Run & Kids Dash, held
7:00–9:00 a.m. in celebration of National Health Center Week. There's something
wonderful about a Tyler morning before the heat sets in — the grass still damp with
dew, the air gentle and damp for just an hour or two, kids's sneakers pounding the

Treasure Hunting Under the East Texas Sun
If August 1 sounds familiar, it's because it is a Canton First Monday weekend — one of
the oldest and largest trade days in the country, with acres upon acres of antiques,
crafts, and finds you won't spot anywhere else. Fair warning: it will be hot, the kind of
shimmering, dusty heat that makes an ice-cold lemonade taste like victory. But if you
don't mind sweating a little for a good bargain, it is an East Texas rite of passage worth

Closer to home, don't miss the Edom ArtWalk on Saturday, August 8, from 5:00–8:00
p.m., hosted by the Edom Craft Community. Wander from studio to studio as the late-
afternoon light turns gold, listen to live music spilling out of open doors, and watch
artists at work with their hands stained in clay and paint. There is artisan food to sample
and local shops to explore — it's community and creativity, served up together. More

Round out the month with the Summer Market at True Vine Brewery on Saturday, August 29, from 9:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m., where local artisans and 
makers set up shop at True Vine

A Little Reverence, A Lot of Harmony
For something truly special, the 71st Anniversary East Texas Sacred Harp Convention
takes place August 8 (9:30 a.m.–3:00 p.m.) and August 9 (9:00 a.m.–2:30 p.m.) at 1500
Lake Forest Parkway in Henderson. This is a cappella shape-note singing at its rawest
and most powerful — voices layered on voices, filling the room until the walls seem to
hum along. Visitors are warmly welcomed to stay for "dinner-on-the-ground"- a tradition

When the Band Starts Warming Up
There is nothing like the moment before a live show starts — the low murmur of the
crowd, the drummer testing his kit, a guitarist tuning up while the last of the daylight fades. You'll get that feeling in spades on Friday, August 21, at 6:00 p.m., when T
The Toadies take the stage live at True Vine Brewing Company. Expect a packed house,
cold pints, and the kind of set list that has everyone singing along by the second song.

Music finds its way into plenty of other August evenings too — from the food-truck
soundtrack at Lindale Family Farms to the artist's tunes drifting through Edom, to the
elegant strains accompanying Hot August Nights (more on that below). Wherever you
land this month, chances are good there is a band warming up nearby.
Where the Smoke Meets the Sweet Tea
Now, let's talk about the food — because in East Texas, no
summer is complete without it. The East Texas Eats Food Festival rolls into BroadwaySquare Mall in Tyler on August 15–16, free to attend, and packed with food trucks, pop-up chefs, and live music. Come hungry. Come ready for the smell of brisket and ribs smoking low and slow, the sizzle of a griddle, and the happy chaos of trying just one more thing off just one more truck. More info here.
For something a touch more refined, Kiepersol hosts a Cabernet Vertical Tasting
Experience on Thursday, August 20, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. — a rare, guided tasting of
estate Cabernet Sauvignon vintages held right in the Barrel Room. Swirl, sip, and savor

And if you're looking for the crown jewel of the month, mark your calendar for Hot
August Nights on Saturday, August 22, from 6:00–9:00 p.m. — an elegant white party
featuring a premier five-course meal with bread service, a medley of downtown cuisine,
live music, popup shops from three local artists, and even live painting, with pieces
available for purchase during a live auction. Picture string lights overhead, the clink of
glasses, and the last of the summer heat finally giving way to a soft evening breeze.
